A brief moment

The family tree above show us a little of the origin of the English Language.

English is a member of the Indo-European family tree of languages. This family tree includes most of the European languages spoken today and lots of died languages.

The first residents of the British Isles probably were the Celts. The Celtic was the language spoke by them.

The British Isles were invaded and conquered by various peoples during several centuries, and they brought their languages and customs with them. In today English, there is almost nothing of the Celtic influence.

The history of English is divided into three periods called Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. The Old English begins with the migration of Germanic tribes from the continent to Britain in the fifth century.

That period was the earliest time when we can say that English was spoken.
